5 Tips to Safely Switch to a Natural Skincare Routine

It’s no secret how natural skincare products are now dominating the market. Now more than ever, people are becoming more and more mindful of what they put IN and ON their bodies. Going natural is turning your back from anything that can harm your skin. Thus, it’s not surprising why people are starting to make the big switch.

Natural skincare products

However, not everyone understands that doing so is not as easy as buying the first “natural” product you see and slapping it on your face. To help you in your journey, here are some tips to help you safely make the switch:

1. Check the ingredients

Not all products labeled with “natural” are the same. Labels may lie, but the ingredients will always reveal the utter truth. Some red flag key ingredients to look out for are parabens, propylene glycol, phthalates, and anything that starts with “petro.” While there are more ingredients that render a product non-natural, these are the ones highly associated with risks and toxicities.

2. Don’t change your whole skincare stash all at once

Changing your whole skincare routine in one snap is one of the worst things you can do to your skin. We understand that you may already be on the edge of your seat trying to stop yourself from throwing out all your non-natural products, but trust us when we say that this can be counterproductive. A good rule to follow is to change your products as they run out. This way, no money is wasted and you’re giving your skin room to adjust to each new natural product you introduce. Focus on one adjustment at a time.

3. Understand your skin type

Switching to a whole new beauty routine means letting go of the products that work and finding new ones that will. This entails knowing what your skin type is to know exactly which products to reach out for.

If you have dry skin, go for honey which acts as a humectant to seal all the moisture in. For dull skin, opt for coffee scrubs which are packed with antioxidants and help increase cell turnover to reveal brighter and glowing skin. To target acne-prone skin, a tea tree soap bar can do a huge deal of wonders, thanks to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. By understanding your skin, you allow yourself to give your skin the nourishment it needs.

4. Turn your back on anything with artificial fragrance

More often than not, anything that’s not free of artificial fragrance is most likely masking a blend of multiple synthetic ingredients to produce that sweet, nice smell. Fragrances remain to be one of the main causes behind various skin conditions such as allergic contact dermatitis, contact urticaria, and irritant contact dermatitis. Unfortunately, some brands can slap on some “100% natural” label and yet have all these harmful ingredients hiding behind some proprietary fragrance blend. Beware!

5. Watch closely

As you introduce new natural products, observe your skin’s reaction very closely. This is also one of the advantages of incorporating products one by one—you get to see how your skin reacts to each one so you know which ones work and which ones don’t. Moreover, never underestimate the power of patch testing. Doing this simple step can save you from a myriad of skin nightmares!
